Prime Pick Update

On two occassions our prime pick group was in action.
In January we had the team from Maynooth visiting Sligo. As in the first encounter last year we had to accept the physical superiority of the Kildare team. However our players did very well to actually sneak through the tight defence of the guests and in fact score a number of nice goals.
On the first weekend in February then we travelled to Collinstown for a tournament in which we met the teams from Muslim school Dublin (Astra), and a combination of Kildare/Terenure. In all three matches the work rate of our team was very high. Everybody on the court was constantly in action, marking opposition or trying to find space for our own attack. With great enthusiasm and spirit our players battled hard against Astra 1 and the Kildare/Terenure combination, but being that little bit younger than the other teams made the difference on the day and we lost both of the matches. Particularly in the match with Kildare/Terenure we also struggled with our fortune when the post and the bar repeatedly prevented us scoring. The consistent efforts throughout all three matches eventually paid off when we recorded our well deserved victory at the end of the day in a tight clash with Astra 2.

Patrick Maher, Anthony Maher and David McNabb recently joined our group. They are a welcome addition to our team.
Amber Hughes has left us as she will move to secondary school soon. We wish her the best of luck.

Family and Friends Day

22 : 35 - Students pay back

In the third encounter between SOHA and the college team of Sligo IT the students paid back for their defeat in December.
A solid defence and a strong backcourt laid the basis for a ratehr convincing victory of the students team over our senior squad last Saturday. The force of the backcourt with Niels Nawabi, Maxim Thenaud and Alex Linke was simply too much to be stopped by our defence formation. Again and again the gaps in our defence were ruthlessly exposed. While the students kept their own forces tight and helped each other in closing down our attacking attempts, it was all down to one v one in our own half, and if any prove was necessary that this does not work on adult level, the half-time score of 6 : 19 speaks for itself.
If we wish to take something positive out of this game, it is the fact that with a few minor adjustments the second half was much better than the first. In attack the way to the goal was sought much more decisively, our line players eventually got into play a bit better, and in defence we stepped up a gear. This led at least to a second half result that saw the two teams at level with each other.
Fair play to the students who have taught us a serious lesson. For our young players it would be necessary to play more often against such strong opposition.

SOHA: Stephen Bartley, Fiach O'Connor, Mark Toolan, Timon Baudry, David Kelly, Sean Geraghty, Killian Filan, Jonney Morrisson, Robert Hamm
Sligo IT: Stuart Milne, Jens Ultsch, Kevin Lasalle, Niels Nawabi, Maxim Thenaud, Alex Linke, Adrian Labate
